Woolworths was an extremely popular retail shop in the UK for many years and was also commonly known as Woolies. A branch of the American chain store, F.W. Woolworth Company (better known as Woolworth’s), which was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1879. Woolworth’s was one of the largest chains of five-and-dime stores in the U.S., and they expanded around the world. Woolworths made its way to the UK in 1909 making Liverpool its base of operations. By 1911, Woolworth’s owned and operated close to 600 stores. The retail giant of its time, Woolworth’s served as the model for today’s large chain stores.

After years of growth and success, Woolworth’s began to focus on more specialised stores. But facing increasing competition Woolworth’s began closing their department stores in the U.S. and Canada in 1993. Their UK stores (owned by the Woolworths Group) survived until they were forced into liquidation in 2008 amidst the global financial collapse.

In 2009, the Woolworths brand name was purchased by the Shop Direct Group – the UK’s largest online retailer, who announced they would launch it as an online store. On June 25, 2009, woolworths.co.uk opened for business offering a variety of products ranging from children’s clothing to small appliances.

Woolworths was probably best known as the retailer for the Ladybird brand of children’s clothing. Ranked third in the children’s wear market; Ladybird offers clothing for children up to age 13. Historically, the Ladybird affiliation with Woolworths began in 1934. Eventually in 2000, Woolworths purchased the brand outright but sold it in 2009 to the Shop Direct Group, who now markets the line on the woolworths.co.uk website.

Today’s marketplace is very different than it was when the F.W. Woolworth Co. opened its first UK store in Liverpool in 1909. Based in the UK, today’s Woolworths offers thousands of products from hundreds of manufacturers and vendors.
